Separatists hold general strike in Indian Kashmir

Thousands of armed troops patrolled deserted streets in Indian-controlled Kashmir on Thursday and shops, businesses and government offices were shut as separatist groups held a general strike to mark the anniversary of the execution of a pro-independence leader 26 years ago.

Police and paramilitary soldiers set up extra checkpoints on roads and warned residents of Srinagar, the largest city, to stay indoors in anticipation of protests.

Hemant Lohia, a top police officer, said gatherings of more than four people were banned.

There were no immediate reports of violence.
