NSW: WorkCover deficit blows out by another $430m
The New South Wales government says the WorkCover deficit blew out by $430 millionin the last six months of 2002 to $3.23 billion.
Industrial Relations Minister JOHN DELLA BOSCA says the deficit in WorkCover, whichmanages the state's workers compensation systems, is due to poor investment returns.
He says the government's controversial changes to workers compensation laws actuallydelivered a $919 million improvement in the scheme's operations in the six months to December31, 2002.
PricewaterhouseCoopers actuary JOHN WALSH, who submitted an independent valuation ofthe scheme, says WorkCover's deficit would have exceeded $4 billion had those reformsnot been implemented.
Mr WALSH says in the absence of reforms, the deficit position would be $919 millionworse than it is at the moment.
